My favorite winter albums

Winter is coming. These remind me of the cold mostly because I heard them for the first time when it was chilly, but don't listen to them to warm up. In no particular order...

Fugazi - Repeater +3 Songs

Get yourself pumped up to snap shoppers out of their consumer comas. The best time for this album is mid to late November when it's freezing, but there's no happy, frosty precipitation to show for it. Listen to Turnover taking a walk on a cold, gray afternoon.

Inerpol - Turn on the Bright Lights

Everything about this album is lonely and dark and cold, which is great right after the new year when you realize you really AREN'T going to follow through on those resolutions. Listen to Untitled when you're driving through Westport on a very dark, snow-sloshy early evening, but only if you're the only one in the car.

Smog - A River Ain't Too Much to Love

I'm really running with a "lonesome" theme. Listen to Drinking at the Dam when you've reached the middle of the countryside on your winter road trip. It's best in the afternoon with an overcast sky with a clean, dry sheet of snow covering corn fields.

Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun

Who the hell doesn't listen to this album in the winter? Listen to Olsen Olsen when it is sleeting in early February, but you're still happy to be running around the neighborhood you grew up in.

the Raveonettes - Whip it On

Too fantastic! Listen to Cops On Our Tail before you go sledding with that special someone on a sunny day in January.

It's December now, and I can't wait to get my lightbox.
